Weekly Invitation August 23

Well that was exciting…this afternoon we felt an earthquake right here in Massachusetts. Did you feel it? It wasn’t much, but it sure was weird. And here, I thought I left earthquakes behind in California. I called my parents. I posted on facebook. I read my friend’s posts on facebook (my California friends think all the fuss is funny). I’ve read coverage of the news online, and listened to it on the radio. And now, I find I’m antsy, like something more should be happening, rather than just going back to work, cleaning house, making dinner. When the earth moves, shouldn’t the world stop?
I wonder if that’s a little bit how Moses felt after he heard the voice of God in the burning bush. He has a profound experience with God, and then what? He has sheep to tend. Yes, he’s got a big task ahead of him, more sheep to tend, but metaphorically this time. But for the moment, he’s got regular fluffy, wooly, vulnerable sheep to watch. And no facebook, no twitter, no way to tell the whole world. No one to turn to and ask, “Did you see that? feel that? Did that really happen?” And who would believe him anyway? We do, but then, we know how the story turns out.
This Sunday, we hear the story of Moses and the burning bush, in Exodus 3. (I wonder why we focus on the bush so much? We don’t call it Moses speaks to God, or hears the voice of God. Hmm…) What happens when God speaks in our daily lives? What happens when God intrudes?
I hope all of your loved ones are safe and sound. I hope the earthquake made you pause, if only for a moment, and give thanks for the awe and wonder of creation.

I’ll see you on Sunday,
Pastor Heather
