Weekly Invitation Feb 3

Yesterday, Phil (the groundhog) didn’t see his shadow.  In the midst of a huge storm, affecting something like a third of our country, a groundhog told us spring is coming early this year.  How many of us, anxious for warmer weather, flowers blooming, trees budding, want to believe him?
We want to believe Spring is coming, and soon.  We want to believe that peace is coming, that the recession is ending, that the world will be a better place soon.  And Jesus tells us, we are the salt and the light that will bring about God’s good plans for the world.  In this week’s gospel lesson, Matthew 5: 13-20, Jesus tells us who and whose we are, and describes our mission.   We are salt and light.  We can’t make spring come any sooner, or even know exactly when it will come.  But we can be salt and light in everything we do, offering hope, joy, comfort, love.
This Super Bowl Sunday, I want to challenge you.  Consider tithing what you spend on Superbowl Celebrations.  Give that money to Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen, or use it to buy cans for our on-going can drive.  So, if you spend $50 on chips and goodies for you, give $5 to the hungry.

I’ll see you on Sunday.  Be salty.

Pastor Heather
