Weekly Invitation Feb 24
This week, the sermon on the mount continues, as we hear Jesus telling us not to worry. Like so many scriptures, it’s so easy to read this as just another platitude, and go right back to thinking (worrying) about the economy, piracy and gas prices, jobs and joblessness, the cost of higher education. In telling us we cannot serve two masters, Jesus keeps bringing us back to God’s plan for the world right now. We can devote all of our time and energy to building up our financial and material possessions, and show others our self-worth in our things. Or we can give ourselves to God’s purposes, and find our self worth as God’s beloved children. We can worry about homelessness in America, or we pick up a hammer for Rural Missions or Habitat for Humanity.
So Jesus says, Don’t worry. Easier said than done. But, as Philippians tells us, 6-7Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. Philippians 4: 6-7.
I’ll see you Sunday,
Pastor Heather
