Weekly Invitation June 1
Dear Friends,
In our text this week, we the hear the story of Jesus’ ascension to heaven. He gives the disciples some clear instructions and departs in one of the all time coolest exits.
“You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. And when he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven?” Acts 1: 8-11
Why?! Of all the dumb questions…like Dorothy sucked up in the Tornado, Jesus ascends on a cloud. How cool is that! We watch helium balloons until we aren’t even sure we can see them anymore. How long would you watch ” him who rides upon the clouds?” Psalm 68: 4.
But here’s the thing…Jesus gave instructions, and the disciples had work to do, not to stand there mouths open, gaping at the heavens, but to be the witnesses. They had to tell the stories of Jesus. They had to heal the sick, and care for the poor, and preach good news, because Jesus was gone.
We can and should live in awe and wonder of the miracles of Jesus and the majesty of God, but we’re also called to ministry. Each and every one of us are called to bear witness to the love of God, and the call of Jesus. How are you doing? Standing, mouth gaping, squinting heavenward, wondering where Jesus has gone…or following in his footsteps, bearing witness?
I’ll see you on Sunday,
Pastor Heather
